When we were house hunting one of the top things on our wish list was to have an open concept kitchen/family room with a separate living room and dining room. I wanted a more formal home. P wanted a home that didn’t isolate him in the kitchen when he was cooking. Hello ASHouse! The kitchen and family rooms are technically one open space that we separated with the addition of our custom kitchen island.
While the space is not huge we were able to break down our U-shaped sectional to accommodate seating for 4 comfortably and up to 6. The plan is to rip out the black marble encasing the fireplace and replace it with marble subway tiles to match the backsplash in the kitchen and add hardwood flooring through out.
In the before below you see the door that leads to 1/2 finished basement (1bed, bath & bonus room) and in the after french doors lead into the living room. The nook to the right provided the perfect wall space for our TV. Here it isn’t the first thing you see (unless entering from the deck). I am still in search of an area rug to unify the space.
Here, again, you see what use to be space for the breakfast nook, now home to the island and door that leads to our deck and back yard.
After much back and forth I finally decided to go w/ bamboo blinds and drapes for window treatments. The bamboo blinds cover the windows that face west (hot afternoon summer sun) and will soon be lined with black out cloth. The drapes, framing the widows on either side of the fire place are made from drop cloths, hemmed and accessorized with ribbon. They are hung from bamboo poles I found at Hobby Lobby.
